Hearing from a newly successful entrepreneur can be inspiring and change our thinking about what is possible. I had the opportunity to hear Jessica Herrin, founder of Stella & Dot, speak at one of our events and found her story to be helpful to anyone who wants to create something big and fast. Of course, she pointed out that “really fast” took eight years to build. She laughs when people call her an overnight success.
Jessica Herrin was a Dell executive then an e-commerce entrepreneur starting the WeddingChannel.com at age 24 yr. Soon after she started making and selling jewelry from her living room. Everyone thought she was crazy. “I [said], ‘Trust me. This is going to be fantastic.'” That was the beginning of Stella & Dot a direct sales jewelry company valued at $450 million dollars.
What Works
Jessica shared during our events some of what she believes was essential for her success. Here is some of what she said.
- Don’t waste mental energy.
- Focus on the positive.
- Don’t think, just do it.
- Always juggle. It works best if I see them as rubber versus glass because I will drop the ball.
- Take care of your body. Don’t waste a moment deciding if you should – just do it!
- Cannot make all people happy. Don’t try.
- Focus on high value tasks.
- Take risks.
- Have mental fortitude.
- Remember that highs come and go. Lows will pass.
- Believe beyond what seems reasonable.
Intuitive Perspective
From an intuitive perspective I see that Jessica has a strong vision, mental image picture of what she is creating. Her attention and energy is focused on this vision so that it changes from a picture to her reality. Jennifer recognizes that she has to be strong of spirit and knows that limits are only in her mind. During her presentation at our NAWBO SFBA Educational Speaker Series and Dinner the women business owners who attended were enthralled because Jessica spoke about success as staying focused and working hard until your vision manifests. Most importantly I saw that she does not allow others to affect her space (energy). She was inspiring and had a strong presence (aura).
In an interview with the Huffington Post Jessica said, “I realized that getting to the business and the life I wanted involved caring a lot less about what other people thought.” Read this interview.
Best wishes on your success, Kay
